UK Asked To Take The Lead In Environmentally Friendly Food Production

The UK government have received a formal recommendation by The Royal Society, a national science debate organization, suggesting that more resources are needed to develop pioneering sustainable farming techniques. Further to this they state that the UK needs to consider how to support farmers and rural populations through their farming methods, when most advances in agriculture seem to be promoting mechanical and automated farming systems that are putting people out of work. From new roaming seeding machines to factory glassware production for product bottling, they are not taking the local communities into consideration. (more…)

New iphone app for cooking is big hit

Only a few days after the release of the Dishy App, it has become the most popular and fastest selling app there is in the app store. Basically, Dishy will make cooking a lot easier and is billed as a recipe book, shopping list and a complete step by step guide to actually cooking a meal all in one go. 95 included recipes, developed by an in-house chef, are searchable by dietary requirements, ingredients, measured in metric or imperial and cooking time. Undergraduates to receive new cookery training

It was once upon a time that students across the country would not know how to cook anything when they started University life but that is now all changing as the student union in Bath, UK are starting to hand out ‘Advanced Lesson in Cooking’ cook books to their students who are due to start University. The cookbook is trying to encourage younger kids to initiate cooking things like oven roasted vegetables and tuna pasta bake instead of opting for fast solid food like pizza pie, burgers and Chinese which is very un-healthy for the body. Food books get handed out at the beginning of every academic year at both Bath Universities in the UK and second and third years come back each year to pick up another one as well as encourage new students to pick one up. Of course everybody knows this loveable British guy.This toon inventor has a pair of big ears to match his love for cheese. His cheese of choice, well its Wensleydale of course.Of course the first time we laid eyes on the pair was way back in 1989 in the film A Grand Day Out in which the pair actually travel to the moon as they realise they have run short of the yellow stuff. Maple Syrup actually (if you didnt already know) originates from the Maple Tree. These Trees can only be found in cold temperatures, which is why Canada and the northern part of the USA are the two biggest producers and really the only two making a difference. In one of those health and nutrition stories that make you think when are they going to tell us to start smoking because its beneficial, Chocoholics around the world can quite literally take heart from research that shows chocolate can help you live longer.According to US research, people who eat chocolate and sweets up to three times a month live almost a year longer than those who eat a lot or those who steer clear of the stuff altogether.Scientists from the Harvard School of Public Health studied 8,000 American men aged around 65 for a five-year period. The results were adjusted for other risk factors, including smoking and alcohol intake.

Chocolate, which was the obsession of the Aztecs (even today chocolate is used as a routine ingredient in South American cooking) was brought to Europe after the Conquistadors conquest of South America.Chocolate is big business with a global market value of around $75 billion, so this research is excellent news for the manufacturers.
